No, you won't die if you overdo the edibles, but the experience might not be what you’d hope for.

Moderate cannabis consumption, as you probably know, can be lots of fun and beneficial to your health. And eating or drinking marijuana, rather than smoking it, has its advantages.

With edibles you inhale no carcinogens, safeguarding those precious lungs. Your buzz also lasts longer (which for some people means longer relief from pain).

And edibles are simply more convenient than sparking a joint...

Sound interesting? Keep reading to see how edibles dosing works, so you can set yourself up for success.

What forms do edibles come in?

Edibles come in all shapes and sizes. With marijuana oil, butter, sugar or flour, the possibilities are endless. You can basically turn any meal into an edible.

Some of the most popular edibles forms include:

The way you ingest the plant will determine the strength and duration of your high. Your body also plays a huge part.

Why everyone is different when it comes to edibles...

Your physiological makeup - how each organism within you interacts and functions - is what determines the outcome of your high. Your tolerance varies based on:

  • Cannabis usage history (tolerance)
  • Rate of absorption in the gut
  • Diet & metabolism
  • Sex & weight

The actual tolerance range is quite wide and complex. Don’t think that because you weigh 250 and are 6’5” that you need more than your itty bitty girlfriend does; that’s not always the case.

How much should I take?

It’s simple. Start low, increase the next day if need be.

The important thing to remember is that the buzz may take longer than expected to show up. A common mistake beginner users make is eating more too soon believing it hasn’t worked. This may bring about some unwanted repercussions.

So how much should you start with? 10mg is considered standard edibles dosing.

Anything under 5 mg is akin to microdosing. If you think your tolerance is particularly low, split 10 milligrams with someone.Keep upping the dose by 5mg until you get the desired sensation, but wait at least 2 hours between each new dose.

Read the label carefully. Some edibles contain 30mg. This dosage is for the experienced consumer. Expect strong mind-altering effects with significant impairment.

At 50mg, an experienced consumer is likely to endure some unpleasant side effects - like nausea, paranoia, and increased heart rate. Take only with the highest of tolerances.

How long will it take me to feel the edibles?

Edibles take longer to kick in than other consumption methods, although this varies. You may feel something after half an hour, or it may take up to an hour or longer in some cases. Dosing matters, as higher-dose edibles kick in quicker.

Keep in mind that cannabis absorption in the mouth happens faster than in the stomach. With weed lollipops or gum, for example, you may feel the effects as fast as 15 minutes later.

What’s an edible high like?

Expect more intense psychoactive effects than if you’d smoked, and for longer.

A cannabis edible high can last up to three times longer, up to 10 hours in some cases.

But if there’s CBD in your edible, even just a little, the mind-altering effects of the THC will be mitigated for anxiety relief and relaxation. A 1:1 ratio of CBD and THC is very therapeutic and the buzz is very limited.

What if I have a bad trip?

It may be hard to believe while you’re in the fetal position, but it will pass. Firstly, make sure to consume the edibles in the right environment; this can help relax you, especially if it’s your first time. Remember to stay hydrated, and keep a large dose of CBD handy (50-200 mg) - it will do wonders to bring you back to normal. And finally, keep in mind that unless you have a serious medical condition, there’s no need to call for emergency medical help.

Just sit through it.
