Cannabis for Sexual Dysfunction & How to Make THC Lube

December 13, 2021

by Ma Raim

People have been bringing cannabis into the bedroom for decades, but why? Does weed help with arousal? Does cannabis mitigate issues of sexual dysfunction? Sex and sexuality are incredibly complicated, but there may be a good reason people are choosing to bring cannabis into the bedroom.

What is Sexual Dysfunction?

While many people may automatically think about erectile dysfunction when they think about sexual dysfunction, it can actually impact anybody.

Sexual dysfunction is defined as persistent, recurring problems with sexual arousal, desire, orgasm or pain that cause a person distress or negatively impact their intimate relationships. It can occur at any stage of life and can occur in only some or all sexual situations.

Symptoms of Sexual Dysfunction

The symptoms of sexual dysfunction fall into four categories:

  • Low sexual desire.
  • Sexual arousal disorder. You may experience desire for sex, but have difficulty becoming aroused or staying aroused during sexual activity.
  • Orgasmic disorder. Problems achieving orgasm after sufficient sexual arousal and ongoing stimulation.
  • Sexual pain disorder. Pain associated with sexual stimulation or genital contact.

Cannabis and Sex

At this point, there isn’t much clinical data on how cannabis impacts sexual arousal or how it may mitigate sexual dysfunction. But we do have plenty of self-reports on cannabis improving people’s sex lives.

But do we know why cannabis may improve sex? Let’s look at what we know and how it can apply to sex.

How Cannabis Can Improve Your Sex Life

Let’s look at the numerous ways that cannabis may be able to improve your sex life by impacting your arousal or mitigating issues with sexual dysfunction.

Sex and Anxiety

Sex can be anxiety-inducing for many people in many different scenarios. Consuming cannabis together before getting intimate can help to manage this anxiety or nervousness. While cannabis, particularly CBD, can help to reduce anxiety, it can sometimes increase anxiety for some individuals, so we recommend consuming cannabis products that you’re familiar with or if you’re new to cannabis try on your own first and start with a low dose.

Sex and Pain

We know that cannabis can help manage pain, but how does that impact sex?

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, approximately 75% of people with vaginas will experience pain during sex at some point in their lives; for many, it’s rare or happens only once, but for others, it’s persistent. The main causes of pain during sex include dryness, pelvic floor dysfunction, vaginismus, vulvodynia, and fibroids.

Cannabis can help with some of these problems; however, if you experience persistent or severe pain during intercourse, you should speak to your doctor.

Cannabis is a vasodilator - it opens blood vessels which increases blood flow. Not only does this help with managing pain and inflammation, but for people with vaginas, it may lead to the relaxation of the vaginal walls and increase lubrication. The natural anti-inflammatory response could also contribute to a reduction in pain associated with penetration.

Additionally, there is some evidence that cannabis can help reduce pain associated with menstruation which may indicate that it could also help with sexual functioning. Research suggests that prostaglandins are one of the main sources of pain associated with menstruation; therefore, treatments that lower prostaglandin levels can be highly effective. CBD has been found to inhibit the prostaglandin-producing enzyme without the negative gastrointestinal issues that typically accompany traditional NSAIDs.

While what we do currently know about cannabis suggests that it may positively impact your sex life, there is still so much we don’t know. More research is necessary to fully understand the relationship between cannabis and sex.

Cannabis and Ejaculation

Lots of people are talking about how cannabis impacts ejaculation. There isn’t enough evidence to conclusively determine how cannabis impacts ejaculation, though it may vary from person to person. What research we do have is from animal studies.

Early animal research suggests that stimulation of the CB1 receptors (cannabis receptors in the brain) can delay ejaculation, which can help with ejaculation-related sexual dysfunction. Delayed ejaculation can also increase pleasure for some, as it makes sexual activity last longer. However, in self-reported studies with adults, participants noted that this delay in ejaculation may be problematic to the point of not ejaculating at all.

What to Know Before Mixing Cannabis and Sex

If you’re planning to consume THC before engaging in sex, there are a few things you should consider, especially if you’re a new cannabis user.

Cannabis is a psychoactive substance that impacts everyone differently, so we recommend familiarizing yourself with cannabis before introducing it into your sex life with a partner. You may even want to consider the first time you bring cannabis into the bedroom to be a solo session. This would allow you to explore how cannabis affects your body and your arousal before adding the additional variables of another person. Yes, we are recommending experimenting with cannabis and masturbating.

When you do introduce cannabis into the bedroom with a partner, consider consent. Consent is critical during sex, and because of the potential impairment caused by cannabis, it’s unclear whether or not a person can give consent while using cannabis. So, you and your partner must discuss consent and boundaries before consuming cannabis and before engaging in any sexual activities while high.

If you are experiencing symptoms of sexual dysfunction or experiencing pain during sex, you should speak to your doctor.

How to Use Cannabis for Sex

There are numerous ways of consuming cannabis and each of them can be used before getting intimate, but some may be better than others. Another thing to consider when choosing a consumption method for intimacy is the time it takes for the cannabis to take effect.

Smoking or vaping together is a great way to get intimate before you get intimate. When it comes to choosing the best cannabis flower to get sexy with, you may want to consider a strain that will give you euphoric feelings and a body high.

While edibles can take longer to take effect, they can also be a great way of getting intimate. Consider some chocolates, honey sticks, salted caramel, or any one of our amazing edibles.

There are even cannabis products on the market that are specifically for sex, like cannabis infused lubricants. Did you know you can make your own cannabis infused lube at home?
